AUSTIN – The U.S. Senate has passed the James R. Dominguez Memorial Act, a bill aimed at renaming a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on U.S. Highway 90 West in Uvalde County, Texas, in honor of James Ray Dominguez. The legislation was introduced by Senators John Cornyn (R-TX), Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and Joe Manchin (I-WV).

Agent Dominguez lost his life on July 19, 2012, while assisting with debris clearance near Cline, Texas. Senator Cornyn remarked, “Agent Dominguez was a courageous officer, loving father, and devoted public servant who tragically died while working to protect his fellow Texans.” He expressed gratitude to his colleagues for supporting the bill.

Senator Sinema stated that renaming the checkpoint honors Agent Dominguez’s bravery and sacrifice: “We are forever grateful for his service.” Senator Cruz highlighted Agent Dominguez as a patriot whose legacy will inspire others: “His legacy will continue to inspire the men and women of our Border Patrol to serve with the same selflessness.”

Senator Manchin emphasized Agent Dominguez's dedication during his more than 12 years of service: “James Dominguez served his country as a Border Patrol agent for more than 12 years, working tirelessly each day to protect the American people and our homeland.”

The legislation was initially led in the House by Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) and passed there on May 21, 2024. It now awaits the President’s signature to become law.

Background information reveals that Agent Dominguez began serving with the U.S. Border Patrol in 2000 until his death in 2012. He was struck by a vehicle while helping clear debris along Highway 90 West near Cline after stopping to assist a stranded motorist. Assigned to the Uvalde Station in the Del Rio Sector, he is survived by his wife and four children.
