WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, expressed his concerns about Boeing's safety and production processes following a meeting with Boeing CEO David Calhoun. Senator Cruz released a statement outlining the issues discussed during the meeting and his expectations for a thorough investigation.

During the meeting, Senator Cruz asked a series of questions to Mr. Calhoun regarding the recent accident and the MAX 9 aircraft. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive and transparent examination of the cause of the accident, stating, "I am hopeful there will soon be a thorough, public accounting of the cause of this accident beyond the current speculation in the press."

Furthermore, Senator Cruz highlighted his concerns about potential broader production issues within Boeing and its suppliers. He stated, "There may be broader, systemic production issues with Boeing and its suppliers that I fully expect the Commerce Committee to review and press for answers." This indicates that the Commerce Committee will be closely monitoring the situation and seeking detailed information from the company.

Mr. Calhoun assured Senator Cruz of Boeing's commitment to safety and a quality culture. However, Senator Cruz made it clear that the Commerce Committee will adopt a "trust, but verify" approach. He said, "Boeing has been a great American employer, and I believe we all want to see it succeed, but Congress has an obligation to make sure the flying public is safe, and there is justifiable concern with Boeing's commitment to safety and quality."

In light of these concerns, Senator Cruz has requested information from Boeing that will enable Congress to assess if broader changes are needed within the company. He stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of the flying public and stated, "I look forward to getting detailed answers and information from Boeing, especially as the Commerce Committee considers an FAA reauthorization."

The meeting between Senator Cruz and Boeing CEO David Calhoun highlights the growing scrutiny on Boeing's safety and production processes. As investigations continue into the recent accident and potential systemic issues, it is crucial for Congress and regulatory authorities to prioritize the safety of the flying public. The thorough examination and transparency in addressing these concerns will be vital in restoring trust in Boeing and ensuring the future success of the company.
