U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) criticized Senate Majority Leader Schumer for deliberately stalling the government funding process. Cornyn accused Schumer of refusing to bring bipartisan appropriations bills to the Senate floor for a vote, causing a potential government shutdown. Cornyn's remarks were made on the Senate floor, where he expressed his frustration with the situation.
In his statement, Cornyn likened the situation to a "bad movie," stating, "Just like a bad movie, Congress finds itself within days of a government shutdown threat." He criticized Schumer for neglecting the responsibility of processing bipartisan appropriations bills, which are essential for keeping the government functioning. Cornyn described this action as "the very picture of incompetence."
Cornyn also highlighted the recurring issue of funding deadlines approaching without a plan in place, saying, "This marks the third time since the end of September that we've just been days away from the funding deadline without a plan in place." He pointed out that more than 100 days had passed since the start of the new fiscal year, while the Senate had only been in session for 39 days. Cornyn emphasized the disparity between the amount of work done and the expectation of receiving a paycheck, stating, "I don't know any business in America where people can work roughly a third of the time and expect to receive a paycheck."
Expressing his disappointment, Cornyn stated, "I'm extremely disappointed we find ourselves where we are today." He placed the blame squarely on Schumer, describing his actions as intentional and holding him accountable, saying, "This is not an accident. This is not even negligent. This is intentional on the part of the Majority Leader, and I think he bears responsibility."
The delay in government funding caused by the refusal to bring bipartisan appropriations bills to the Senate floor has created a tense situation. With a potential government shutdown looming, the responsibility for the current state of affairs is being placed on Senate Majority Leader Schumer. As the deadline approaches, the need for a resolution becomes increasingly urgent.
