Governor Greg Abbott praised the accomplishments of Texas in higher education at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's (THECB) Higher EDge 2023 leadership conference in Austin. Joined by THECB Chairman Dr. Fred Farias, Governor Abbott commended the efforts of the attendees, stating, "Collectively, you all have put Texas on a trajectory of excellence in higher education in our great state."
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of top-notch research universities in providing a high-quality education and preparing innovative leaders for the workforce. He highlighted Texas's rise as a top state for Tier 1 research universities over the past decade and its status as the state with the most new jobs and Fortune 500 company headquarters. CEOs are choosing Texas because of the quality of its workforce, which is a testament to the efforts of higher education institutions in the state.
During his speech, Governor Abbott also discussed the laws he signed during the 88th Regular Legislative Session. One of these laws, House Bill 8, will change community college funding to an outcomes-based model, ensuring that Texas continues to have a young, diverse, and well-educated workforce. Another law, House Bill 1595, establishes the Texas University Fund, a $3.9 billion permanent endowment to provide sustainable funding for research efforts at Texas Tech University, Texas State University, University of Houston, and University of North Texas.
The conference was attended by over 400 higher education leaders who are dedicated to furthering the success of Texas's higher education system. Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude to them for their work in cultivating a skilled workforce for the future.
