Governor Greg Abbott has made appointments to the Texas Optometry Board, naming a new chair and appointing three members to the board. The appointments were made to oversee the licensing and regulation of optometrists in the state of Texas.
Mala Sharma of Houston has been appointed to the board. She is an attorney specializing in personal injury civil litigation at Sharma & Associates, P.C. Sharma is also involved in various legal associations and has a strong commitment to community service. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Houston and a Juris Doctor from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law.
Steven Nguyen, O.D. of Irving has also been appointed to the board. He is the president and owner of Southwest Dallas Eyecare and has a wealth of experience in the field of optometry. Nguyen is a member of several professional organizations and has served in leadership roles within the industry. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Optometry and Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston.
Bill Thompson, O.D. of Richardson has been reappointed to the board. He is a doctor of optometry and the owner of Buckner Vision. Thompson has a distinguished career in optometry and has served in various professional and community organizations. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and a Doctor of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry.
Ron Hopping, O.D. of Friendswood has been named the chair of the Texas Optometry Board. He is a managing partner at Hopping Eye Associates, LLP and is a respected therapeutic optometrist and optometric glaucoma specialist. Hopping has extensive experience in the field of optometry and holds multiple degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Kenyon College, a Master of Public Health from The University of Texas School of Public Health, and a Doctor of Optometry from Southern California College of Optometry.
These appointments will serve to ensure the effective regulation and oversight of optometrists in Texas.
