Governor Abbott, TWC Announce 7th Annual Texas HireAbility Campaign

October 19, 2023 | Austin, Texas | Press Release

Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) have joined forces for the seventh annual Texas HireAbility campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the benefits of hiring people with disabilities. This initiative comes in the wake of Governor Abbott proclaiming October 2023 as Disability Employment Awareness Month in Texas.

In a statement, Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of diversity in the workforce, saying, "One of the many reasons why Texas is the economic engine of America is because of our diverse workforce, and that includes the nearly 2 million Texans with disabilities across our state." He further added, "Through Disability Employment Awareness Month and Texas HireAbility, we can build an even stronger, more inclusive Texas of tomorrow."

TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel highlighted the role of vocational rehabilitation services in creating a dynamic landscape for employers and job seekers. He stated, "The workforce in Texas represents an incredibly diverse range of talents and abilities, and the breadth of that range continues to bring new businesses into the state."

TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Aaron Demerson emphasized the mutual benefits of hiring people with disabilities, stating, "Hiring people with disabilities helps businesses meet their workforce needs while supporting individuals in maximizing their potential."

TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the value that individuals with disabilities bring to the workforce. He said, "Texans of all abilities create a stronger workforce and bring a greater value of experience and insight for employers."

As part of the Texas HireAbility campaign, TWC and its partners are organizing a series of disability awareness promotions and hiring events throughout October. One such event, the Texas HireAbility Employer Forum, will take place in Edinburg on October 26. The forum aims to share the latest accessibility and disability inclusion practices with employers. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from disability advocates, industry professionals, and experts in the Americans with Disabilities Act. The forum will also feature the GCPD's Lex Frieden Employment Awards, recognizing individuals who have made outstanding efforts in advancing disability inclusion in Texas.

Additionally, TWC has launched the We Hire Ability employer recognition program, which acknowledges businesses, nonprofits, and other entities that have a workforce of at least 10 percent of people with disabilities in an integrated workplace.
