Governor Greg Abbott of Texas met with former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss at the Texas Capitol to discuss ways to strengthen the economic partnership between Texas and the United Kingdom. This marked Truss' first visit to Texas and her first meeting with Governor Abbott.

During the meeting, Governor Abbott and former Prime Minister Truss discussed their shared interests in bolstering their respective economies. They explored how the United Kingdom can learn from Texas' model of economic success, which includes low taxes, reasonable regulations, and business-friendly policies. Truss also commended Governor Abbott for signing the largest property tax cut in Texas history earlier this year.

The Governor and former Prime Minister also discussed Texas' ongoing efforts to attract more businesses to the state. They emphasized the importance of protecting vital industries from unnecessary state and federal regulations. Governor Abbott highlighted his commitment to defending Texas' oil and gas industry from President Joe Biden's energy policies. He expressed his opposition to environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) standards and highlighted the laws he has signed to support the flourishing energy sector in Texas.

In July, First Lady Cecilia Abbott and Secretary of State Jane Nelson led an economic development mission to Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. During their visit to London, they highlighted Texas' strong economic ties with the United Kingdom. They also promoted Texas at the United Kingdom House of Parliament, showcasing the state's robust economic opportunities.

The United Kingdom is the leader in foreign direct investment projects in Texas. In 2022, Texas' trade with the United Kingdom amounted to $21.2 billion, making them the state's ninth-largest total trade partner. Over the past decade, companies from the United Kingdom have invested $5.6 billion in capital and created more than 15,100 jobs through 337 projects in Texas.

Governor Abbott's meeting with former Prime Minister Truss further solidifies the economic partnership between Texas and the United Kingdom. The discussion focused on ways to enhance economic cooperation and replicate Texas' success in attracting businesses and fostering economic growth.
