In February, areas throughout Texas experienced unprecedented and record-breaking temperatures and weather patterns that led to a deadly winter storm that left much of the state scrambling to restore electricity, water and other essential services.
Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas) spoke on the House floor to honor the brave workers, including linemen in the 25th District and around Texas for their heroic work during the storm and relentless dedication to restoring service for residents that were affected.
"Honored to thank the brave linemen of #TX25 for their heroic efforts during the catastrophic winter storm last month," Williams said in a tweet. "Their quick response, incredible grit, and perseverance helped successfully restore critical power to homes and communities across the state."
The storm saw as many as 13 million residents lose power, which left many without heat and other essential services as temperatures plunged. The incredibly dangerous situation led to many deaths and difficulties throughout the state. In total, there were 111 deaths stemming from the storm due to lack of emergency services as well as lack of basic necessities such as running water, electricity, and food.
As a result, first responders and emergency services were rushed into action. Selena Xie, an Austin-area medic, detailed her account working with patients during the winter storm.
“My first patient who told me that he thought he was going to die, and he was telling me to put him out of his misery, because of the lack of oxygen,” she said.
At the center of the chaos were the linemen. As they struggled to restore essential services for days on end, snow continued to fall and temperatures continued to drop. The statement and recognition by Williams echoes the feelings of many throughout the state who were helped by the constant efforts by linemen to restore power.
