Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce wins 2020 Deal of the Year Gold Award

The Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce has been awarded the 2020 Deal of the Year Gold Award from Business Facilities, a national publication that has been the leading location source for corporate site selectors and economic development professionals for more than 50 years.

The Chamber won this award for its work to bring Tesla’s Giga Texas to the Austin area.

“The Chamber's Opportunity Austin team worked tirelessly with Tesla and our government and community partners to make this deal a reality,” Opportunity Austin Chair Gary Farmer said. “Giga Texas is a true game-changer for our region and is much deserving of this national attention.”

The new factory will allow individuals to obtain new skills and develop career paths, Farmer said last year when the deal was announced.

“Our community has the strong desire to ensure everyone in our region has opportunities to grow, opportunities to achieve success, and opportunities to provide a better future for their children,” Farmer said. “Tesla’s decision to locate its newest Gigafactory in Austin will expand and enhance our innovative culture while also providing new and exciting career opportunities for all segments of our Central Texas workforce. The company’s pioneering spirit and advanced manufacturing technologies will be instrumental in our region’s economic recovery and our sustainable growth for the longer term.”

The company is expected to create an estimated 5,000 jobs, from entry-level to skilled labor, and management, with career pathways. The Austin Chamber estimates that each job directly created will lead to four indirect and induced jobs.
