Austin is among 30 U.S. cities selected to participate in a Bloomberg Philanthropies program designed to help local jurisdictions manage budget pressures in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The capital of the Lone Star State, which is home to nearly 1 million people, will be able to develop and implement plans to facilitate financial recovery that takes low-income residents and communities of color into consideration as part of the What Works Cities’ City Budgeting for Equity and Recovery program.
“The City of Austin has placed equity at the heart of our fiscal response to COVID-19, by prioritizing grants and loans to those who need it most,” Austin’s Chief Financial Officer Ed Van Eenoo said in a press release. “We look forward to teaming up with Bloomberg Philanthropies and the 29 other participating cities in using the latest data, trusted expertise, and peer input to build on our progress and make sure our recovery works for everyone.”
