Austin City Council member Jimmy Flannigan is running for re-election for District 6, a seat he has held since 2016.
"We are standing at a moment in history," Flannigan said on his campaign website's "About" page. "Communities are rising up all over our country – including here in Austin – demanding real and lasting change. I am proud to fight on the front lines of progress and represent District 6 in the ever-growing city we love. It has been my honor to serve and I look forward to earning your support for a second term."
Flannigan has lived in Austin for 20 years and says he has dedicated the last decade to working to make Austin better by fighting for small businesses and traffic solutions. As a council member, he has been a member of the Austin Chamber's Transportation Committee and co-founder and organizer of the Northwest Austin Coalition, according to his website's "Meet Jimmy" page.
He also served as the former president of the Austin LGBT Chamber of Commerce. He is the chair of the CAPCOG Economic Development board, chair of the Council's Judicial Committee, chair of the Community Advancement Network and vice chair of the Council's Mobility Committee.
Flannigan is a member of the Audit and Finance Committee, the executive committee of CAPCOG, the board of CAMPO, Hate Crimes Task Force and Pecan Street Project.
He says he's running for re-election to ensure residents of Austin have a representative who will listen to their concerns, in addition to advocating for Austin residents and solving citywide problems.
"I've earned the trust of the council to lead on critical issues facing our city and our region, putting District 6 at the head of the table on public safety, economic development, public health and transportation," Flannigan said on the "Re-Elect Jimmy!" page of his website. "We have worked hard to solve District 6 and citywide problems in affordability and fiscal responsibility, health, safety and traffic and mobility."
Although Flannigan doesn't offer specifics on his position on homeless camping, he has worked to approve hotels for conversion into housing for homeless residents of Austin.
He is also working with the City Council to meet social justice reforms.
"Here in Austin, our City Council has already put structural change into motion by offering new ways to set appropriate goals, measure success, and rethink responsibilities and tasks that have traditionally been held by the police department," he said on his website's "Safety" page. "As chair of the new Public Safety Committee, we’re taking a deliberate approach to our work by hosting robust dialog with stakeholders – including law enforcement, criminal justice reform advocates, and other local and national community experts – to thoroughly learn about and vet methods to improving our public safety as a city."
