According to a report by Reform Austin, Texas has one of the largest pay gaps in the nation for Latino workers.
Based on a 2019 report by the U.S. Census Bureau, Latin women make only 44.7 cents on the dollar as compared to white males.
One of the biggest factors fueling the pay gap is the fact that Texas is one of only five states in which equal pay protections do not apply to workers from the private sector or small businesses.
Currently, there lacks sufficient legislation to protect Latino workers in the state of Texas. In 2017, a bill was presented to combat the pay gap but it died in the senate committee, Reform Austin said.
A recently elected Hispanic representative, Sylvia Garcia, D-Houston, spoke on the pay disparity,
"As we continue to fight to close the gender pay gap, we MUST make sure Latinas are a part of the conversation. We demand more. We deserve better," Garcia said.
