Austin, Texas' Nicole's Place has recently opened, offering a safe haven for children who been victimized as a result of sex trafficking.
The soft opening of the facility was in mid-December. It will be operated by Upping, a nonprofit dedicated to children's welfare. Austin 20, an Austin-based nonprofit, handled the fundraising.
Austin 20's founder, Lisa Knapp, hoped to have the facility ready for use for children ages 11 to 17 by the middle of this month. Knapp started her nonprofit after seeing a gap in care for minor victims of sex trafficking.
Nicole's Place has been named after a young woman who died at the age of 21 following a life of abuse.
The facility, the first of its kind in Austin, seeks to fill that gap in protecting vulnerable minors who are found in difficult and dangerous situations. Currently, Nicole's Place is seeking individuals to help staff the facility. It is interested in paid staff and volunteers.
