Texas Softball won its first Southeastern Conference (SEC) Tournament Championship with a 7-1 win over Alabama on May 9 at John Cropp Stadium. This marks the program’s first conference tournament crown since 2005 and its fifth overall.

The win is significant as it ends a long gap since Texas last claimed a conference tournament title, highlighting the team’s progress and performance this season. The Longhorns have now secured five conference tournament championships, having previously won in 1999, 2002, 2003, and 2005. Under head coach Mike White, Texas has reached the championship game three times in the past four seasons.

The team improved to a record of 42-10 overall and leads the nation with twenty wins against RPI Quad 1 teams. Texas is currently on a four-game winning streak that includes three victories against top-13 ranked opponents.

Several players received recognition for their performances during the tournament. Junior right-handed pitcher Teagan Kavan was named Most Valuable Player after striking out twelve batters across seven innings while limiting Alabama to one run on three hits. Kavan’s strikeout total was the highest in an SEC Tournament championship game since Montana Fouts accomplished the same feat in 2021. Other Longhorns selected to the SEC All-Tournament Team include senior second baseman Leighann Goode, junior shortstop Viviana Martinez, and freshman third baseman Jaycie Nichols.

Offensively, junior first baseman Katie Stewart led Texas with three hits—including her twenty-fifth home run of the season—and two runs batted in. Senior right fielder Ashton Maloney had two singles and scored once; senior catcher Reese Atwood contributed both a base hit and an RBI sacrifice fly; junior center fielder Kayden Henry drove in another run; while pinch hitter Victoria Hunter added an RBI single that tied the game early on.

Looking ahead, Texas will participate in the NCAA Softball Tournament after earning an automatic bid by winning their conference title. The selection show for this year’s tournament is scheduled for Sunday evening.
