The Texas Longhorns softball team will face the Texas A&M Aggies in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown at McCombs Field from March 27 to March 29. The series marks the first regular season meeting between the two teams since 2012, with games broadcast on SEC Network+, ESPN2, and ESPN.
This matchup brings together two top-ranked programs, with Texas currently holding the No. 1 spot across all four major national polls and riding a program-record 27-game winning streak. The rivalry is significant for both teams and fans, as it renews longstanding competition between former conference foes.
The Longhorns have set several records this season, including an undefeated road record of 8-0—the fifth-longest such streak nationally—and accumulating sixteen run-rule victories. Freshman pitcher Hannah Wells recently earned her first Southeastern Conference weekly honor as Freshman of the Week on March 24. Head coach Mike White is in his eighth season leading Texas and holds a career record of 345-94-2 with the program.
Historically, Texas leads the all-time series against Texas A&M by a narrow margin (26-24), including a strong home record of 15-8. Their last encounter was during the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Athens, Georgia, where Texas A&M won decisively. However, their most recent Austin meeting saw dramatic games that sent Texas to last year’s Women’s College World Series after clinching two close victories over their rivals.
Looking ahead, this series begins a challenging stretch for Texas: they are scheduled to play thirteen consecutive games against ranked opponents—including twelve straight against top-fifteen teams—highlighting what coaches have called a “gauntlet” portion of their schedule. Following this weekend’s rivalry matchup, Texas will travel to face No. 7 Alabama before returning home for further high-profile contests.
