Texas Softball clinched the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown series with a 3-2 victory over No. 15 Texas A&M on Mar. 28 at McCombs Field in Austin. The team also won the opener of the series, finishing Friday night with a score of 9-8.

The outcome gives Texas an overall record of 31-1, including an undefeated home streak and a national-best win streak of 29 games. The game was highlighted by strong performances from several players and recognition for two seniors following the final out.

Senior catcher Reese Atwood contributed both offensively and defensively, going two-for-three at bat with two runs batted in from a solo home run and a single. Atwood also threw out two base runners attempting to steal second base and executed a no-look pickoff at third base. Senior shortstop Viviana Martinez drove in another run for Texas with an RBI single during the first inning.

Freshman pitcher Hannah Wells earned the win after pitching five and two-thirds innings, allowing only two runs on seven hits while striking out three batters. Junior pitcher Teagan Kavan secured her second save of the season by retiring all four batters she faced in relief.

After the game, Athletes Unlimited Professional Softball league presented seniors Reese Atwood and Leighann Goode with “golden tickets,” signifying their official selection into the AUSL College Draft pool.

The final game of the series between No. 1 Texas and No. 15 Texas A&M is scheduled for Sunday at McCombs Field, with broadcast coverage set for ESPN.
