The No. 3 Texas Men’s Golf team finished the third round of the NCAA Championship in second place on May 31 after recording a 7-under 281 at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, California. Senior Christiaan Maas led the Longhorns with a 3-under 69, contributing to the team’s lowest score of Sunday’s morning wave.
In addition to Maas’ performance, Texas counted scores from senior Luke Potter and senior Tommy Morrison, who each shot a 2-under 70, and graduate Matt Comegys with an even-par 72. The field was cut to the top 15 teams and top nine individuals on non-advancing teams following Sunday’s play. The fourth and final round of stroke play is scheduled for Monday, June 1.
No. 1 Auburn leads the team standings by three strokes with a total of 22-under 842 over three rounds. Texas follows at 19-under 845, while No. 11 Vanderbilt is third at 9-under 855. Oklahoma State’s Preston Stout holds a one-stroke lead in individual standings with an overall score of 11-under par.
Texas head coach John Fields said, “We put ourselves in really good position with today’s round. We’ll be chasing Auburn tomorrow and will try to win the medal (low score after stroke play). I’m really happy with the guys’ performance today. The hole locations were very difficult, and the golf course played a little bit harder than it did yesterday. Shooting 7-under par was an outstanding score, and I’m really happy for the guys.” Fields also said about his team’s resilience, “Our closing stretch (last four holes) shows how resilient this team is… They are resilient and they work hard to be that way… This is nothing new for us, and I know they’re excited about coming out here and playing tomorrow.”
Individually for Texas, Maas climbed into a tie for twenty-second place overall; Morrison is tied for seventh; Potter moved up ten spots into eleventh; Comegys stands tied thirty-second; Bennett sits tied sixty-sixth after carding two-over par Sunday.
The top eight teams following Monday’s final round will advance to match play quarterfinals on Tuesday.
