Americans value the fundamental rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Human trafficking poses a significant threat to these rights, affecting around 25 million individuals annually.

Characterized by sexual exploitation or forced labor, human trafficking is often described as a modern form of slavery. Addressing this issue requires collective responsibility. It involves understanding warning signs, recognizing the urgent need for action, and supporting ongoing rescue efforts.

Law enforcement agencies and private organizations collaborate with statewide entities to implement prevention initiatives, protect vulnerable populations, and bring traffickers to justice. Despite meaningful progress in these areas, much work remains to eradicate human trafficking entirely.

Each January is dedicated to raising awareness about human trafficking and honoring those working towards its end. Texans are encouraged to educate themselves on the dangers and indicators of human trafficking and take action against it.

Governor Greg Abbott has proclaimed January 2025 as Human Trafficking Prevention Month in Texas. He urges all Texans to observe this occasion with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

“In testimony whereof,” Governor Abbott stated, “I have hereunto affixed my signature this the 13th day of December, 2024.”
