As winter weather approaches, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has issued a reminder to Texans about the potential hazards posed by extreme cold, freezing rain, ice, and snow. The department emphasizes the importance of preparation and caution for both drivers and pedestrians during these conditions.

“Winter weather can be unpredictable, but by making safety a top priority you can help take control,” stated Colonel Freeman Martin. He advised planning ahead, checking road conditions, and adjusting driving habits according to road types as key measures that could significantly enhance safety during the winter season.

The DPS recommends several safety precautions for winter weather. Vehicle maintenance is crucial; this includes inspecting the battery, windshield wipers, tire pressure, tire treads, and fluid levels. Additionally, ensuring that door and trunk locks are lubricated can prevent them from freezing. An emergency kit stocked with warm clothing, food, water, a cell phone battery/charger, and first aid supplies is also advised.

These guidelines aim to assist residents in navigating the challenges posed by winter weather safely.
