The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is set to enhance its statewide patrols in a bid to enforce seatbelt use and curb distracted driving during the Memorial Day holiday period. This initiative, part of the annual All-American enforcement campaign, will see increased patrols from May 12 through May 26 by the Texas Highway Patrol (THP). The focus will be on enforcing seatbelt laws and promoting safe driving behaviors.
“Our top priority is saving lives on Texas roads,” stated Texas Highway Patrol Chief Bryan Rippee. “As Memorial Day approaches, we’re stepping up enforcement to ensure drivers are buckled up, attentive and following the law. These efforts help protect families and prevent tragedy.”
The THP’s increased enforcement is a component of Operation CARE (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort). In the previous year’s campaign, DPS reported over 122,361 citations and warnings issued. Among these were more than 8,462 speeding violations; 601 seat belt infractions; 2,752 instances of driving without insurance; and 579 felony and fugitive arrests.
Texas law requires drivers to comply with Move Over or Slow Down regulations. Violations can result in a misdemeanor punishable by fines up to $1,250. Repeat offenses may lead to higher fines, and if bodily injury occurs due to an offense, it could escalate to a state jail felony.
Motorists are reminded to keep the Texas Roadside Assistance number handy at all times for any travel-related assistance by dialing 1-800-525-5555. This number is also available on the back of a Texas Driver License.
