Nearly 200 current and former Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) employees participated in the department’s largest Legacy Run to date, held Wednesday morning in Austin as part of DPS’s 90th anniversary observances. The event took place ahead of the upcoming graduation for Recruit Class A-2025.

The six-mile run began at Camp Mabry, which is the original headquarters of DPS, and concluded at the south steps of the Texas State Capitol. Participants included members from across Texas, with both retired and active personnel joining recruits for the commemorative run. Colonel Freeman F. Martin ran alongside them for his first Legacy Run since assuming his role as Colonel in December 2024.

“The Legacy Run is a powerful tradition that represents the determination and commitment of every DPS recruit who accepts the call to serve,” said DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin. “This particular run, marking our 90th anniversary, is a reminder that while the department continues to evolve, our core values remain the same. These recruits are not just running toward the finish line — they’re stepping into a legacy of public service that spans generations, and it was a tremendous honor to run alongside them this morning.”

Before setting off around 5:30 a.m., Public Safety Commissioner Larry Long and Colonel Martin addressed Class A-2025 at Camp Mabry. The route took runners through Central Austin, onto the University of Texas campus, past the Governor’s Mansion, and ended at the Capitol where family members greeted them.

Class A-2025 will graduate from DPS’s 30-week Training Academy on Friday, August 8. Graduates are scheduled to begin their assignments across Texas on September 1.
