Governor Greg Abbott, in collaboration with the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), has announced that more than $46.3 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants will be allocated to 175 organizations throughout Texas. These grants, approved by TVC Commissioners last week, aim to provide direct services to veterans and their families across the state. The funding is expected to benefit over 40,000 veterans and their family members.
“Texas is forever indebted to the brave men and women who answered the call to serve in our nation’s military,” stated Governor Abbott. He emphasized that Texas is home to over 1.5 million veterans—more than any other state—and reiterated the state’s commitment to supporting veterans through these substantial grants.
Laura Koerner, TVC Chairwoman and Navy veteran, highlighted the importance of these funds: “Veterans receive vital services and assistance from these nonprofits and local governments across the state.” She detailed how FVA grants would facilitate a range of services including clinical counseling, housing assistance, financial support, legal services, and more.
The grant funding supports a variety of essential services such as employment support, home modification programs, homeless veteran aid, peer support initiatives, transportation services, Veteran Treatment Courts among others. Texas veterans can locate relevant resources via the Grant Services Directory on tvc.texas.gov/fund.
Funding primarily comes from games designated by the Texas Lottery Commission for veteran support. Additional sources include donations made through drivers’ licenses renewals, handgun carry licenses applications, outdoor recreation licenses for hunting and fishing activities as well as vehicle registrations.
Since its inception in 2009 up until the current grant cycle of 2025-2026, more than $359 million has been awarded through approximately 1,600 FVA grants.
The Texas Veterans Commission continues its mission advocating for superior quality of life improvements for all Texan veterans alongside their families and survivors by assisting them in obtaining benefits they are entitled to while also administering educational benefits under the Hazlewood Act.
