Texas Longhorns junior pitcher Teagan Kavan recorded her 500th career strikeout during a game against the University of Oklahoma on April 10, but the No. 4 ranked Texas Softball team lost to No. 2 Oklahoma, 3-0, in the opening game of their series.

Kavan’s milestone makes her only the sixth player in program history to reach this achievement. She joins Cat Osterman, Blaire Luna, Meagan Denny, Christa Williams and Tiarra Davis on this list. Kavan struck out a season-high 13 batters over seven innings while allowing three runs on six hits and four walks. After surrendering a two-run home run in the first inning, she did not allow another run until giving up a solo home run in the sixth inning. Her performance marked her sixth double-digit strikeout game of the season and tied Arizona State’s Kenzie Brown for most strikeouts against Oklahoma this year.

Offensively for Texas, junior center fielder Kayden Henry had two hits for her thirteenth multi-hit game of the season. Senior right fielder Ashton Maloney hit her second triple of both this season and her career with a leadoff triple in the fifth inning. Senior catcher Reese Atwood, senior designated player Kaydee Bennett and junior shortstop Viviana Martinez also contributed with hits.

Texas now holds an overall record of 32 wins and five losses (9-4 in conference play), including twelve wins against ranked opponents out of seventeen games played.

The next matchup between Texas and Oklahoma is scheduled for Saturday at McCombs Field with television coverage provided by ESPN.
