A broad coalition, including advocacy groups, law enforcement, and tech leaders, is pressing Congress for the swift approval of the TAKE IT DOWN Act. Introduced by Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz and Senator Amy Klobuchar, this legislation has already passed in the Senate.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise expressed his intent to bring the bill to the House floor after its advancement from the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

In a letter led by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, over 185 organizations called for action. They emphasized the urgency of passing the TAKE IT DOWN Act, stating, “We cannot go another day where teenage girls are victimized by adult offenders and even classmates and left feeling hopeless with no recourse.”

The legislation aims to hold technology firms accountable and provide victims with legal recourse. It addresses issues like sextortion and the sharing of intimate imagery without consent, while ensuring free speech is not compromised.

Tech companies, including Meta, Amazon, and Google, have shown their support. A letter from these organizations highlighted the dangers of artificial intelligence when misused, stating, “Passage of this legislation will help protect countless victims from this type of abuse.”

The act also received backing from public figure Paris Hilton, who referred to it as “a crucial step toward ending non-consensual image sharing online.”
