Michael Scott Mitte, the former executive director of the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation, and the son of the charitable institution's founders, has died at the age of 64.

"Mitte," as he was known, died Sept.1, according to his obituary

He served as the foundation's director until his arrest in 2008, for possession of cocaine, according to a 2011 KXAN news report. His arrest eventually led to a guilty plea and six years' probation. The foundation gave out millions of dollars in scholarships around Central Texas, according to KXAN.

Both Mitte and his father, Roy, were at the center of a number of scandals that caused Texas State University to cut ties with the foundation in 2008, according to a Chronicle of Philanthropy article.

According to the chronicle, Mitte had settled four sexual harassment cases filed by woman who worked for the foundation and the insurance company owned by his father, Austin Insurer Financial Industries. Roy Mitte was fired from the company in 2002, when an audit showed he illegally funneled the company's money into the foundation.
