U.S. Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, both representing Texas, have introduced a Senate resolution to honor former First Lady Barbara Pierce Bush on the week of what would have been her 100th birthday. The resolution highlights her life, achievements, and public service.

Barbara Bush was born on June 8, 1925, in New York City. She attended Ashley Hall and Smith College before working in a factory during World War II to support the U.S. war effort. In 1945, she married George Herbert Walker Bush after his return from military service.

The couple moved to Odessa, Texas in 1948 and had six children: George W., Robin, Jeb, Neil, Marvin, and Dorothy. Barbara supported her husband’s early business ventures in oil that eventually became Pennzoil Corporation. She also backed his political career beginning with his role as Harris County Republican Party chairman in 1963 and subsequent election to the House of Representatives.

During George H.W. Bush’s tenure as a congressman, Barbara kept constituents informed through newspaper columns about Washington happenings. Throughout their marriage, she orchestrated numerous family relocations due to her husband’s various appointments including U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and Director of Central Intelligence.

As Second Lady from 1981 under Vice President George H.W. Bush’s term with President Reagan’s administration until becoming First Lady following her husband’s presidential victory in 1988 with an unmatched electoral vote count since then—426 votes—Barbara championed literacy efforts which led to establishing the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy in 1989 and contributing significantly towards passing National Literacy Act (1991).

Her compassion extended towards AIDS patients during times when public opinion remained hostile against them; post-White House years saw publication success via ‘Barbara Bush: A Memoir’. Following son George W.’s presidency win (2000), she became only second woman historically both wife/mother presidents within America while continuing support throughout sons’ campaigns—including Jeb’s run (2016).
