U.S. Senators John Cornyn, John Fetterman, James Lankford, and Ruben Gallego have introduced the SHIELD Against CCP Act. The proposed legislation aims to establish a working group within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to address threats from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Senator Cornyn emphasized the importance of targeting China from all angles, stating that the bill would provide DHS with necessary tools to protect American sovereignty against CCP influence. Senator Fetterman highlighted issues such as fentanyl supply and intellectual property theft linked to the CCP, expressing his support for stronger measures.
Senator Lankford noted various threats posed by the CCP, including illegal immigration and cyberattacks, while Senator Gallego pointed out fentanyl trafficking’s impact on Arizona communities. Both senators stressed that the bill would enhance DHS capabilities in safeguarding U.S. borders and citizens.
The legislation has received bipartisan support in Congress, passing overwhelmingly in the House of Representatives under Congressmen Dale Strong and Tom Suozzi’s leadership.
The SHIELD Against CCP Act proposes several actions for DHS: examining efforts to counter threats like terrorism and cybersecurity posed by the CCP; reviewing information related to these threats; submitting annual reports to relevant committees; and sunsetting seven years post-establishment. Additionally, it requires research into technologies enhancing security against such threats.
The act is endorsed by multiple law enforcement organizations including Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association and National Border Patrol Council.
