Leaders in the telecommunications industry and various policy organizations have expressed their support for the Senate Commerce Committee’s spectrum provision. This proposal, which is expected to be part of the Senate budget reconciliation text, aims to create a significant spectrum pipeline and generate approximately $85 billion for American taxpayers. The reinstatement of spectrum auction authority is anticipated to bolster the U.S. economy, meet consumer demands, and reinforce American leadership in wireless technologies while safeguarding national security interests.
Senator Ted Cruz released the Senate Commerce Committee’s section of the Republicans’ budget reconciliation bill last week. Former President Donald Trump praised Senator Cruz for negotiating a spectrum deal with Senator Roger Wicker and Senator Tom Cotton.
Senator Cruz stated that “The Commerce Committee section invests in bold and transformational policies that will positively impact Americans now and for generations to come.” He emphasized efforts such as fixing air traffic control systems, rebuilding the Coast Guard, ensuring U.S. achievements in space exploration, and expanding commercial access to spectrum.
Several organizations have voiced their approval:
– Americans for Tax Reform highlighted that “The Senate Commerce reconciliation bill makes even more spectrum available for auction than the House version.”
– AT&T noted that renewing FCC’s auction authority is “a strong step toward meeting consumers’ insatiable demand for mobile data.”
– CTIA – The Wireless Association emphasized that Senator Cruz’s approach provides flexibility to meet consumer demand while protecting national security.
– Digital Liberty called it “a great step forward for innovation.”
– Economic Policy Innovation Center acknowledged Senator Cruz’s work as fostering innovation and economic growth.
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr commended President Trump’s efforts: “Freeing up spectrum is key to America’s economic prosperity & national security.”
Former FCC Commissioner Harold Furchtgott-Roth praised Senators Cruz, Thune, and Blackburn for advancing economically sound provisions.
Other supporters include Free State Foundation, Hispanic Leadership Fund, Information Technology & Innovation Foundation, NATE: The Communications Infrastructure Contractors Association, National Taxpayers Union, Recon Analytics, R Street Institute, T-Mobile, Verizon among others. These entities recognize the potential benefits of increased wireless infrastructure deployment through additional commercial use of spectrum.
