In a recent Senate Commerce Committee nominations hearing, Chairman Ted Cruz praised President Trump and Secretary Duffy for prioritizing safety at the Department of Transportation (DOT). Cruz highlighted the need for strong leadership at DOT’s key safety agencies to ensure both security and efficient travel for Americans.

Cruz emphasized the qualifications of Derek Barrs, nominated to lead the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), noting his extensive experience in law enforcement and familiarity with FMCSA regulations. Jonathan Morrison, nominated for Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), was recognized for his previous role as NHTSA’s chief counsel and his experience in the tech sector. Paul Roberti, nominated to head the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), was acknowledged for his prior service as PHMSA’s chief counsel.

Cruz expressed hope that he and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell could reach an agreement on reauthorizing PHMSA. In his prepared remarks, Cruz stated: “Americans want a transportation system that is fast, convenient, and reliable—but above all—safe.”

Derek Barrs has spent nearly three decades improving large truck and motor carrier safety, rising from deputy sheriff to head of Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. As FMCSA Administrator, he aims to modernize trucking and busing industry regulations.

Jonathan Morrison is dedicated to ensuring road safety through NHTSA standards that keep pace with automotive innovation. Having served as NHTSA’s Chief Counsel during Trump’s first administration, Morrison brings valuable tech sector experience.

Paul Roberti is poised to manage PHMSA’s oversight of hazardous materials transport. He previously cleared a backlog of enforcement matters at PHMSA during Trump’s first term. His work in Rhode Island included modernizing pipelines and enhancing their safety.

Cruz concluded by expressing anticipation for hearing from all nominees alongside Ranking Member Cantwell.
