In a recent Senate Commerce Committee nominations hearing, Chairman Ted Cruz, representing Texas, spoke about the urgency of maintaining U.S. leadership in space and telecommunications. This was part of the proceedings for the nominations of Jared Isaacman as the Administrator of NASA and Olivia Trusty as a Member of the FCC.
Senator Cruz stressed the significance of U.S. presence in space, highlighting China’s ambitions to dominate the field. “The explosive growth of the commercial space sector—from hardware manufacturers to space tourism ventures—has transformed the celestial and economic landscape,” he noted. With advancements like the commercial spaceflight commanded by Isaacman, NASA faces new opportunities and challenges.
The Senator further discussed the importance of the International Space Station (ISS) and ongoing NASA missions like Artemis, which aim to return American astronauts to the Moon. “We cannot surrender low Earth orbit to the Chinese or to the Russians,” he stated. Cruz emphasized the bipartisan support for the Moon-to-Mars program, a “stepping stone to landing American astronauts on Mars.”
On telecommunications, Cruz addressed the loss of FCC’s authority for spectrum auctions and the challenges posed by outdated broadcast ownership rules. He expressed confidence in nominee Olivia Trusty, citing her extensive experience in telecommunications and policy work within the Senate. Cruz remarked, “I am confident Ms. Trusty will be an asset at the FCC, where she will champion a spectrum pipeline, protect free speech, and ensure access to fast and affordable internet.”
The committee anticipates remarks from the nominees, who are expected to outline their visions and strategies for leading NASA and FCC respectively.
