Governor Greg Abbott announced that Rockport-Fulton has achieved the status of a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community. This designation comes from the Texas Music Office (TMO) after the community completed a certification process aimed at promoting music-related economic development and job creation in Texas.
Governor Abbott expressed his congratulations, stating, “Music is key to the Texas brand and is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of our great state. Music Friendly Texas Communities work tirelessly to attract and develop the local music industry to boost local job creation and economic growth.” He highlighted that the Texas music industry contributes significantly with 196,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs and over $31 billion in annual economic activity statewide.
Senator Lois Kolkhorst also congratulated Rockport-Fulton, noting its potential for enhancing opportunities for musicians and boosting tourism. “This coastal region offers a variety of attractions… significantly contributing to the local economy,” she remarked.
Shelly Stuart, President and CEO of Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center, commented on the pride associated with this recognition. She stated, “With this certification, we gain more than just recognition. We gain new tools and partnerships that will help grow our local music scene.”
Sandy Jumper from the Rockport Songwriter Association emphasized how this designation could positively impact local musicians and venues by bringing entertainment from across Texas. Aransas County Judge Ray Garza echoed these sentiments by highlighting music’s role as an economic driver and community connector.
The official certification ceremony will be co-hosted by TMO alongside local organizations on May 9 at The Harbor Tent at Charlotte Plummer’s. The event will feature presentations by city officials including Gini Mascorro from TMO.
Rockport-Fulton now joins 81 other communities as part of this program since its inception in 2016. The initiative supports not only job creation but also enhances tourism through fostering musical talent across Texas.
