U.S. Senator Ted Cruz and Senator John Cornyn, both Republicans from Texas, have taken action with several of their Senate Republican colleagues to address the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). The group has sent a letter to ATF Director Steve Dettelbach urging the agency to halt any further rulemaking activities as they prepare for the incoming Trump administration.

The letter emphasizes the need for a smooth transition, stating that “the incoming Administration, including our next Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General, and ATF Director, must have the opportunity and ability to set ATF’s priorities and future direction.” The Senators express concern that new policy initiatives at this time could cause instability.

The communication advises the ATF to pause on issuing new rulings or publications unless directly supporting specific criminal investigations. It also recommends against launching new regulatory initiatives or changing policies during this period.

Senators Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Jim Risch of Idaho, Katie Britt of Alabama, and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota joined Cruz and Cornyn in sending this letter. They highlight the importance of maintaining focus on combatting violent crime while ensuring an effective transition.

The letter concludes by expressing gratitude for Director Dettelbach’s service and cooperation during this transitional phase.
