The Public Utility Commission of Texas urged Texans on June 1 to stay alert and prepared throughout the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which runs through November 30. The commission said Texans can track potential power outages and restoration times using the PUCT’s Storm Resources webpage.
“Texas hurricane season is here, and now is the time for Texans to stay informed, follow official sources for severe weather updates, and make a plan for a potential emergency,” Public Utility Commission Chairman Thomas Gleeson said. “Hurricanes can cause local power outages and other safety risks. The PUCT’s online resources are available 24/7 to help consumers prepare for severe weather, understand safety risks, and contact their electric utility.”
PUCT rules require all electric utilities that deliver power to retail customers to maintain an online electric outage tracker in both English and Spanish. The commission’s Consumer Protection Division is available to assist consumers with questions or concerns at 1-888-782-8477 or consumer@puc.texas.gov.
The Texas Division of Emergency Management provides additional severe weather preparedness tips on its website. Residents in hurricane-prone areas are encouraged by TDEM to monitor local forecasts, build emergency supply kits, review flood risk, and consider insurance coverage.
In preparation for hurricane season, the PUCT coordinates with electricity providers across Texas to ensure appropriate measures are in place for quick response during outages. Providers in affected areas must also send preparedness information as billing statement inserts. As part of the Texas Emergency Management Council, the PUCT works with the Governor’s Office, TDEM, state agencies, and higher education systems on storm response efforts.
