U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Chair of the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Technology, and Data Privacy, will lead a hearing titled “WADA Shame: Swimming in Denial Over Chinese Doping” on May 22, 2025. The session aims to scrutinize the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) effectiveness in maintaining doping-free international sports events and its impact on U.S. athletes.

The hearing will address WADA’s alleged inconsistent enforcement of anti-doping rules, which reportedly led to unfair competition for American athletes, especially with the upcoming LA Games in 2028 and Salt Lake City Games in 2034.

In 2021, allegations surfaced that WADA failed to investigate claims of Chinese swimmers testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs before the Tokyo Olympics. A New York Times report later exposed a cover-up, with WADA allegedly rejecting oversight and ignoring efforts by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) to ensure fair play.

Senator Blackburn expressed concern over WADA’s actions: “The World Anti-Doping Agency has allowed Communist China and Russia to lie, cheat, and steal, putting American athletes at risk.” She emphasized the need for accountability at WADA and stated that the hearing is a step toward ensuring fair competition.

Senator Cruz also commented: “American athletes have every right to be concerned about cheating in the upcoming Olympic Games,” highlighting the necessity for transparency from WADA regarding past investigations.

Witnesses scheduled to testify include Mr. Travis Tygart, CEO of USADA; Dr. Rahul Gupta, President of GATC Health Corp; and Ms. Katie McLaughlin, a former Olympic swimmer. Additional witnesses may be announced later.

The hearing will take place at 10:00 AM EST in Russell Senate Office Building Room 253 and will be livestreamed on the Committee’s website.

Reporters interested in attending should contact their respective media galleries for RSVP details.
