U.S. Senator Todd Young, who chairs the Senate Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, Freight, Pipelines, and Safety, will lead a hearing titled “On the Right Track: Modernizing America’s Rail” on June 18, 2025. The hearing aims to assess the current condition of the U.S. freight and passenger rail systems with a focus on improving safety, efficiency, innovation, and sustainability for future infrastructure needs.

Senator Young emphasized the importance of railroads beyond mere transportation. “Freight and passenger railroads are about more than just transportation. This industry supports thousands of good-paying jobs, which strengthens Indiana’s role as the ‘Crossroads of America’ and better connects our communities to markets across the country,” he stated. He added that innovation and streamlined regulations are essential for maintaining competitiveness in the modern economy while ensuring rural areas are not overlooked.

Senator Cruz highlighted the significance of railroads in transporting goods such as agricultural and energy products across the country. He expressed optimism about developments in intercity passenger rail and technological advancements in freight rail services. “Whether it’s transporting people or goods, railroads must keep innovating to provide safer, more efficient service,” he remarked.

The hearing will feature several witnesses including Mr. Ian Jefferies from the Association of American Railroads; Mr. Peter Gilbertson representing Anacostia Rail Holdings Company on behalf of the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association; and Mr. Husein Cumber from Florida East Coast Industries.

Scheduled for 10:00 a.m. EST at Russell 253 in Washington D.C., this session will be accessible via live stream on the Committee’s website.
