Texas Governor Greg Abbott renewed the state’s disaster proclamation for border security on April 17, covering dozens of counties and all affected state agencies. The renewal extends the original order first issued on May 31, 2021, which declared that a surge of individuals unlawfully crossing the Texas-Mexico border posed an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster.

The continued extension underscores ongoing concerns about public safety and resource allocation in regions along the Texas-Mexico border. According to Abbott’s statement, “the certified conditions continue to exist and pose an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster as set forth in the prior proclamations.” The renewal maintains all previous orders, directions, suspensions, and authorizations from earlier proclamations.

The latest proclamation applies to a wide range of counties including Aransas, Brewster, Cameron, El Paso, Hidalgo, Maverick, Starr, Webb, Zapata and many others. Copies of this proclamation are required by law to be filed with relevant authorities. Abbott signed the document at his office in Austin.

Greg Abbott is serving as the 48th governor leading the Texas Governor’s office according to the official website. The Office of the Texas Governor provides services across Texas while promoting economic opportunity, education and public safety according to its official website. It also advances cultural understanding through commissions supporting opportunities for women and people with disabilities according to its official website.

The Governor’s Mansion has served as both a historic symbol since its establishment in 1856 and as one of the oldest continuously occupied governor’s residences in America according to its official website.

Broader implications from this renewed declaration include continued collaboration between state agencies under executive leadership focused on addressing issues related to public safety along Texas’s southern border.
