Governor Greg Abbott received the Sun and Star Legacy Award on Apr. 16, highlighting Texas’ strong economic partnership with Japan at the Japan America Society DFW Awards Gala.
The award recognizes leadership in strengthening economic and cultural ties between Texas and Japan, a relationship that has contributed to job creation, investment projects, and shared prosperity for both regions.
“Texas and Japan share similar values like hard work, freedom, and innovation,” Abbott said. “That’s why we collaborate on issues like advanced manufacturing, life sciences, and on energy areas that require creative solutions to today’s largest challenges. Our shared values enhance prosperity for both Texas and Japan, and be assured that I will continue my work to strengthen the Texas-Japan relationship.”
During his remarks at the gala, Abbott pointed out that Texas has been named Best State for Business for 21 consecutive years. He also noted its top ranking in economic development, job creation, and new business investments. According to Abbott’s speech, Japan is now Texas’ seventh-largest trading partner with more than $25.9 billion in annual trade. Over the past decade Japanese companies have launched more than 140 investment projects across the state supporting tens of thousands of jobs in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, energy, and life sciences.
The event was attended by several local leaders including Plano Mayor John Muns; Toyota CEO Tetsu Ogawa; Adam Zehner of the Japan American Society DFW; President Grant Ogata; Consul General Takeshi Koyama; and Dr. Emily Knight from the Texas Restaurant Association.
