Governor Greg Abbott has praised the Texas Legislature for passing significant legislation aimed at enhancing the state’s water infrastructure. The recent approval of Senate Bill 7 and House Joint Resolution 7 marks a substantial investment in addressing Texas’s water needs.
“With the dramatic population growth that Texas continues to experience, our water supplies are drying up, impacting Texans and communities across our great state,” Governor Abbott stated. He emphasized the importance of this initiative by highlighting its role in repairing broken and leaking pipes and supporting agricultural producers in regions like the Rio Grande Valley and West Texas.
Abbott expressed gratitude towards Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Speaker Burrows, Senator Charles Perry, and Representative Cody Harris for their efforts in facilitating this legislative achievement. “Texas will make a generational investment to our water infrastructure and tap into new water supplies,” he noted.
The governor also mentioned his intention to sign Senate Bill 7 into law promptly. Additionally, he encouraged Texans to support a constitutional amendment related to these measures in an upcoming vote this November. This step is seen as essential for ensuring sufficient water resources for the next five decades.
Earlier this year, during his State of the State Address, Governor Abbott identified investment in water infrastructure as an emergency priority for the current legislative session.
