Governor Greg Abbott met with Spanish Ambassador to the United States Ángeles Moreno Bau at the Texas Capitol to discuss enhancing economic ties between Spain and Texas. During their meeting, Ambassador Moreno Bau expressed support for Texans affected by recent flooding, referencing a similar incident in Valencia last year.
The ambassador highlighted Spain’s significant economic presence in Texas, with over 100 investment projects in sectors such as energy production, infrastructure, and steel manufacturing. Governor Abbott noted that Texas is a leading destination for foreign direct investment and has led the nation in business relocation and expansion for 13 years.
The discussion also touched on historical and cultural links between Texas and Spain. Both leaders acknowledged the enduring Spanish influence in Texas, including The Alamo’s history as a Spanish mission and its symbolic role in Texas’ fight for independence. They also mentioned the San Antonio Missions complex being designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Spain ranks as the eighth-largest source of foreign direct investment projects in Texas. Since 2003, Spanish companies have invested $5.83 billion across 103 projects in the state, creating nearly 8,000 jobs. In 2024, trade activity between Texas and Spain amounted to $10.1 billion. Exports from Texas account for 33.9% of all U.S. exports to Spain, while imports make up 8.2% of U.S. imports from Spain.
