Governor Greg Abbott has been sworn into the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Review Council. He participated virtually in the council’s first public meeting to discuss FEMA’s future and its emergency response capabilities.
In his opening remarks, Governor Abbott expressed gratitude to President Donald J. Trump for creating the FEMA Review Council. The initiative aims to streamline emergency response and effectively assist disaster-impacted communities. Abbott emphasized Texas’ experience with a range of disasters, from fires in the Panhandle to hurricanes along the coast. He highlighted Texas’ leadership in coordinating emergency response efforts with local, state, and federal partners to ensure necessary support and resources for recovery.
Governor Abbott also mentioned his anticipation of continued collaboration with the Trump Administration to empower states as primary responders during disasters.
President Trump appointed Governor Abbott to this bipartisan council last month. The group is tasked with reforming and streamlining national emergency management and disaster response systems.
On January 24, President Trump issued an Executive Order establishing the Council to Assess the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The council’s goal is to advise on FEMA’s ability to address U.S. disasters capably and impartially, recommending changes that best serve national interests.
