Governor Greg Abbott participated in a solemn event to honor fallen peace officers last night in Austin. The Texas Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony took place at the Texas Capitol, where Abbott conveyed the state’s gratitude to those who gave their lives in law enforcement duties.
In a significant gesture, the Governor presented the Texas Medal of Honor to a family member of each of the 40 officers remembered during the ceremony. “To all the law enforcement officers, I share with you the eternal gratitude that Texas has for your brave and tireless service,” stated Governor Abbott. He emphasized Texas’s support for law enforcement, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice for bravery and valor. Abbott remarked, “This Peace Officers Memorial is far more than just a granite monument—it is a reminder of Texas heroes taken too soon.” He affirmed that while these officers are no longer with us, “Texas will always remain grateful for their valor.”
The event is held annually to pay tribute to law enforcement personnel who died serving their state and local communities. The ceremony was attended by an extensive roster of officials and law enforcement figures, including Senator Brian Birdwell, Senator Sarah Eckhart, Senator Bob Hall, Senator Adam Hinojosa, and Senator Mayes Middleton. Others in attendance included Representative Brooks Landgraf, Representative Janie Lopez, Representative Brent Money, Representative Terri Leo Wilson, Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman, and president of various law enforcement associations including Scott Leeton of the Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas, Ken Gardner of the Texas Municipal Police Association, and Clint McNear of the Texas Fraternal Order of Police, along with many other officers and family members.
