Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Major General Roger O. Sheridan as the Commanding General of the Texas State Guard. The appointment is for a term that will last at the Governor’s discretion.
Governor Abbott expressed his confidence in Major General Sheridan, stating, “Major General Roger O. Sheridan’s decades of selfless sacrifice and service to his country makes him the perfect individual to lead the Texas State Guard.” He further highlighted Sheridan’s military experience, saying, “Serving in crucial military operations as a Marine, including Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, Major General Sheridan brings a wealth of exemplary military experience to the Texas State Guard. I am confident that he will professionalize the nation’s premier state defense force and uphold the integrity of the Texas State Guard.”
Major General Sheridan resides in Bryan and currently serves as deputy director of the Brazos Valley Council of Governments. His recent role was Brigade Commander of the 6th Brigade. His military career spans over 21 years with both active duty in the Marine Corps and reserve service until his retirement in 2009. During his tenure, he participated in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Restore Hope. In 2012, he joined the Texas State Guard. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Sam Houston State University.
