Governor Greg Abbott has announced the allocation of over $7.3 million in Texas Talent Connection grants to 22 workforce skills training and job placement programs across the state. These funds aim to enhance job creation and economic growth by equipping Texans with necessary skills for better employment opportunities.
“Texas leads the nation in job creation thanks to the Best Business Climate in America and our skilled, growing workforce,” stated Governor Abbott. He emphasized the importance of connecting Texans with skills training to meet workforce demands in an expanding economy. “Together with our community partners and entrepreneurs, we will build an even stronger Texas workforce of tomorrow,” he added.
The grants are designed to support innovative education and training programs that lead to successful job placements, increased wages, and improved job retention. They also target special needs populations, including opportunity youth aged 16-24 who are not engaged in education or employment.
Some notable grant recipients include:
– Alliance of Community Assistance Ministries, Inc., receiving $350,000 for healthcare career initiatives across several counties.
– American YouthWorks awarded $350,000 for a pre-apprenticeship project targeting opportunity youth.
– Brazosport College granted $349,432 for re-engaging opportunity youth through fast-track education in healthcare and construction trades.
– Houston’s Capital IDEA, Inc., securing $350,000 for nursing and technology pathways for low-income adults.
These programs span various sectors such as healthcare, IT, trades, manufacturing, and more. The Texas Workforce Investment Council plays a crucial role in strategic planning and evaluation of these initiatives to ensure a well-educated and highly skilled workforce in Texas.
The funding comes from Wagner-Peyser 7(b) grant funds allocated by the U.S. Department of Labor to encourage innovation in workforce training services.
