Governor Greg Abbott has announced that more than $10.9 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants have been awarded to 37 organizations serving North Texas and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The funding, administered by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), will provide services to over 4,500 veterans and their families across 32 counties.
“Texas is grateful for the brave men and women who selflessly served our country in the greatest military in the world,” said Governor Abbott. “The more than $10.9 million in grant funding will provide significant support and services to our veterans and their families in North Texas and Dallas-Fort Worth, including clinical counseling, service dog programs, and financial assistance. Texas will always support those who bravely put their lives on the line to defend our nation and our freedom.”
“I want to sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans,” said TVC Commission Secretary and Marine veteran Chuck Wright. “Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in the lives of those who served. The North Texas and DFW area has a strong military community, and it is home to many veterans. It’s great seeing the community give back to those who served.”
Secretary Wright presented the grants at the Denton County Courthouse in Denton. The FVA grant recipients include a range of organizations such as Adaptive Training Foundation, Baylor Research Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star, Canine Companions for Independence, several city governments including Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth, Collin County MHMR Center dba LifePath Systems, Meals On Wheels Of Tarrant County, Patriot PAWS Service Dogs, United Way of Denton County, United Way of Tarrant County, among others. Services funded by these grants cover areas like clinical counseling, support services, skill-based training support, homeless veteran support programs, housing assistance through Housing for Texas Heroes initiatives, service dog programs, peer support services, financial assistance programs, small business support for veterans, referral services and more.
Earlier this year in May 2025 Governor Abbott announced a record $46.3 million distributed through over 200 grants benefiting 175 organizations statewide—a move expected to directly assist nearly 40,000 veterans along with their dependents and surviving spouses.
Since its inception in 2009 through the current 2025-2026 grant cycle, more than $359 million has been distributed via over 1,600 FVA grants across Texas.
The FVA grants fund a broad array of services ranging from emergency financial help to transportation solutions; legal aid; family support; home modifications; rental or mortgage assistance; as well as specialized categories such as General Assistance Grants; Housing for Texas Heroes Grants; Veterans Mental Health Grants; Veterans Treatment Courts; and Veteran County Service Officers.
Funding comes primarily from designated games run by the Texas Lottery as well as donations made during vehicle registration or when purchasing hunting or fishing licenses.
