Today in Austin, Governor Greg Abbott addressed the annual Texas Border Sheriff’s Coalition, emphasizing the need for bail reform and acknowledging ongoing state and local efforts to enhance border security. During the conference, Abbott expressed gratitude to Texas sheriffs for their role in maintaining community safety amid border security challenges.
“Sheriffs have been the brave law enforcement officers tasked with keeping their communities safe and secure,” Abbott stated. He underscored the critical issues associated with the current bail system, noting that, “Too many judges grant repeat offenders two, three, and 16 chances that they do not deserve.”
Abbott credited border sheriffs for their activities under Operation Lone Star, notably in seizing quantities of fentanyl sufficient to endanger the entire populations of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He also commended their role in capturing various criminals, including drug cartel affiliates and human traffickers. Abbott took the opportunity to praise sheriffs for being “the unsung heroes of law enforcement” in their multifaceted roles.
Abbott called for urgent reforms, concerning the bail system as a priority for law enforcement to address. He highlighted the adverse impacts of multiple leniencies, especially on repeat offenders, that sheriffs must confront.
“The deadly and broken bail system we face in Texas” was a recurring theme throughout the Governor’s speech, alongside mention of past federal administration policies.
