Governor Greg Abbott has announced that Garland, Texas, has been recognized as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community by the Texas Music Office (TMO). This designation comes after Garland completed a comprehensive certification process. The Music Friendly Texas program, initiated by TMO in 2016, aims to promote economic development and job creation within the music industry across Texas.

Governor Abbott congratulated Garland on this achievement, stating, “Music is key to the Texas brand and is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of our great state.” He emphasized that Music Friendly Texas Communities are pivotal in developing local music industries, which contribute significantly to job creation and economic growth. According to Governor Abbott, the Texas music industry supports 196,000 jobs and generates over $31 billion annually.

Senator Bob Hall praised Garland’s recognition as a testament to its vibrant cultural identity and support for the arts. He remarked that music is not just a pastime but a driving force for economic opportunity and community pride in Garland.

Representative Ana-María Rodríguez Ramos highlighted Garland’s musical heritage and its role in fostering stronger communities through investment in the arts. She noted notable contributions such as Willie Nelson’s recording at Audio Dallas and performances by the Garland Symphony Orchestra.

Mayor Scott LeMay reflected on Garland’s long-standing musical history from early bands to current traditions like bluegrass jams and performances at local venues. He stated that music plays an integral role in bringing people together within the community.

Garland Cultural Arts Director Amy Rosenthal expressed pride in receiving this designation, acknowledging it as recognition of local musical talent and commitment to supporting the arts through various live events year-round.

Jimmy Wallace, owner of Jimmy Wallace Guitars and founder of the Dallas International Guitar Festival, also shared his enthusiasm for this recognition. He emphasized that it highlights Garland’s unique music scene while underscoring culture, connection, and community pride.

The official certification ceremony will be cohosted by TMO and Garland Cultural Arts on May 17 at Granville Arts Center during celebrations marking 50 years since Willie Nelson’s album “The Red-Headed Stranger” was released. TMO Community Relations Specialist Gini Mascorro will present the designation.

Garland now joins 82 other communities with this certification. The TMO continues its mission since 1990 to support economic development within Texas’ music sector through various initiatives including their statewide Music Friendly Community Program established in 2016.
