FOIA Request to Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Regarding Financial Aid Fraud on May 7, 2025.
As part of our ongoing commitment to uncovering and reporting on governmental affairs, Austin News has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The request seeks detailed records concerning financial aid fraud within Texas colleges, a pressing issue highlighted by recent reports from California community colleges.
The request specifically asks for data points including the names of colleges involved, applicant names associated with fraudulent activities, the amounts defrauded, and the dates of these incidents. This inquiry is driven by alarming findings from California where bots have been reported to constitute 25% of financial aid applicants. These “Pell runners” are exploiting artificial intelligence to secure grants and disappear without a trace, resulting in significant financial losses for educational institutions.
Austin News aims to gather this information under the Texas Public Information Act to ensure transparency and accountability within public institutions. We believe that access to these records is crucial for our role in informing the public and holding entities accountable. As members of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, we leverage Freedom of Information laws to shed light on government actions and contribute to an informed electorate.
We have requested that the information be provided in electronic format and have applied for a fee waiver given our status as media professionals dedicated to disseminating important news. Our efforts align with our mission to provide comprehensive coverage on issues affecting local communities and beyond.
