U.S. Senators Ted Cruz and Thom Tillis have reintroduced the Justice for Victims of Sanctuary Cities Act, a legislative effort aimed at addressing sanctuary policies and offering justice to victims affected by them. The bill is designed to hold cities accountable for not complying with federal immigration detainer requests.
Senator Cruz stated, “Sanctuary cities undermine the integrity of our legal system and jeopardize the safety of law-abiding citizens. Texas continues to bear the brunt of the crisis at our southern border. This bill sends a clear message: cities that prioritize politics over public safety will face consequences.” He emphasized that the legislation aims to provide victims and their families with a path to justice while enhancing cooperation between local and federal law enforcement.
Senator Tillis expressed his concerns regarding jurisdictions ignoring lawful requests from ICE agents, saying, “For far too long, we have watched local jurisdictions in North Carolina and across the country ignore the lawful notification and detainer requests made by ICE agents and instead release dangerous criminals back into their communities, putting innocent lives at risk.” He voiced his commitment to work with President Trump to end illegal immigration and address sanctuary city policies.
The bill has garnered support from several other Republican senators including Bill Cassidy, Kevin Cramer, Katie Britt, Roger Marshall, Tim Sheehy, Lindsey Graham, Mike Rounds, and Ted Budd. In parallel, Representative Chuck Edwards is set to introduce companion legislation in the House of Representatives.
The proposed act would allow individuals who are victims of serious crimes like murder or rape to file lawsuits against states or political subdivisions that do not honor lawful immigration detainer requests from the Department of Homeland Security. Additionally, it mandates that states waive immunity as a condition for receiving certain federal grants.
