U.S. Senators Ted Cruz and Chuck Grassley have introduced a legislative proposal aimed at protecting Second Amendment rights while addressing gun violence. The proposed bill, named the Protecting Communities and Preserving the Second Amendment Act, seeks to enhance the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), prosecute gun-related crimes, and tackle cartel-driven gun trafficking.
Senator Cruz expressed his commitment to collaborating with Senator Grassley to support school safety funding, improve NICS reporting, and prosecute illegal firearm purchases. “These measures are common sense,” he stated, urging Senate colleagues to pass the legislation due to its previous bipartisan support.
Senator Grassley emphasized the importance of balancing Americans’ right to bear arms with public safety priorities. He noted that the bill aims to strengthen background checks and combat gun trafficking along the southern border. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to advance this commonsense measure,” Grassley added.
The legislation outlines several specific actions: enhancing recordkeeping by requiring states to submit relevant mental health records to NICS; preserving Second Amendment rights for veterans, active military members, and citizens; increasing accountability through annual reports from federal agencies on NICS submissions; prioritizing public safety by coordinating enforcement efforts and prosecuting gun crimes; and combating cross-border smuggling with new task forces without additional taxpayer costs.
