U.S. Senator John Cornyn introduced legislation aimed at reimbursing Texas for over $11 billion spent on Operation Lone Star, the state’s border security initiative. This move follows criticism of President Biden’s handling of border issues. The bill is co-sponsored by Sen. Ted Cruz and will be led in the House by Congressman Chip Roy.
Senator Cornyn stated, “For four years, Governor Abbott and Texas taxpayers were forced to bear the brunt of the Biden-Harris border crisis.” He emphasized that his legislation aims to ensure Texas is repaid for its efforts to secure the southern border.
Senator Cruz remarked, “Texas was on the frontlines of the Biden administration’s open border crisis,” expressing support for the reimbursement initiative alongside Governor Abbott and Senator Cornyn.
Congressman Roy added, “For four years, Texans stood in the breach of the worst border crisis in recent American history.” He stressed that states like Texas deserve federal reimbursement for their frontline defense efforts.
The proposed State Border Security Assistance Act seeks to establish funds within the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security to reimburse states for border security measures taken since January 2021. It includes provisions for costs related to wall construction, surveillance, and prosecution of illegal entries. The funds are intended to cover all expenses incurred by Texas and would expire at the end of a future Trump Administration term, with any leftover funds returned to reduce national debt.
Senator Cornyn has been actively advocating for this cause by supporting Governor Abbott’s reimbursement requests and engaging with congressional colleagues about legislative strategies.
